# Is matte PLA worth it, and how does it differ?

Matte PLA is still PLA. Bambu’s PLA Matte sheet describes a matte finish and lists the same nozzle as PLA Basic, 190–230 °C (374–446 °F), and the same bed, 35–45 °C (95–113 °F). On those two specimen sheets the matte grade’s Z tensile and Z impact numbers are lower. This batch did not include a Reddit consensus, so that sheet comparison is the difference on record.

Buy matte PLA when you want the finish the sheet describes. Do not buy it because a forum consensus said it was worth it. This batch’s bank left that summary blank.

## What Bambu writes on the two sheets

PLA Matte TDS V3.0 says the filament has a matte finish and is designed for high-speed printing, and that compared with general PLA it can reach 250–300 mm/s. PLA Basic TDS V3.0 uses the same speed sentence and then says Basic has excellent toughness and Z-layer strength. The matte sheet does not use that toughness sentence.

Settings that match on both sheets:

- Nozzle 190–230 °C (374–446 °F)
- Bed 35–45 °C (95–113 °F)
- Blast-oven drying at 50 °C (122 °F) for 8 h
- Retraction 0.6–1.0 mm at 20–40 mm/s
- Print speed under 300 mm/s
- Nozzle sizes 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8 mm

The catalog bed for [PLA Matte](/brand/bambu-lab/pla-matte) is still 50–70 °C (122–158 °F). That cell is the Open Filament Database import. The sheet is the number to print.

## Specimen numbers, not a verdict

Bambu prints the disclaimer on both sheets: the values are for design reference and comparison, and a real part depends on the printer and the settings. On the sheets as written:

- Matte Z tensile strength 22 ± 4 MPa, Basic 31 ± 3 MPa
- Matte Z impact 6.6 ± 1.1 kJ/m², Basic 13.8 ± 0.9 kJ/m²
- Matte density 1.31 g/cm³, Basic 1.24 g/cm³
- Matte glass transition 61 °C (142 °F), Basic 60 °C (140 °F)

ELEGOO, SUNLU, and eSUN matte rows are not these specimens. Their names say matte. Their stored temperatures are the Open Filament Database ranges above. [PLA+](/answers/pla_vs_plaplus) is a different label and is not a matte grade.

## When the finish matters

[Fine FDM detail](/answers/high_detail) names matte PLA together with a 0.2–0.25 mm nozzle. [Silk PLA](/answers/silk) is the glossy opposite, and that page does have a consensus: decorative, and weaker in the community’s words. Everyday PLA setup stays on [how to get good PLA prints](/answers/pla_print).

## What the community says

The 15 October 2026 candidate bank lists five threads for this question and leaves the consensus summary empty. This page does not invent one. Product claims are limited to the Bambu PLA Matte and PLA Basic sheets read for this page, and to temperatures already stored on the other rows.
